Iris is Still Battling Extreme Injuries

6/11/2025 – Iris Update

It’s been two weeks since we introduced you to Iris – a dog who was witnessed being dragged behind a moving car on a busy road. Since she arrived at our Sam Swope Pet Treatment and Lifesaving Center, Iris has been under constant observation. With degloving wounds covering her feet and legs and awful road rash on her chest and stomach, keeping Iris infection-free has been our biggest concern. Her feet and legs stay wrapped for most of the day to ensure they remain free of debris until her tissue and muscles are no longer exposed. Every day as we re-wrap her wounds, we find new pieces of healthy, pink skin showing us that Iris’s body is capable of healing from the unthinkable abuse she endured.

Iris’s healing journey will continue to take time, but we won’t rest until she makes a full recovery. Despite the horrific things she’s been through, she’s loving towards our staff and craves soft touches from her human friends. Iris is living proof that dogs are resilient, forgiving creatures. We are so grateful that, thanks to supporters like you, we’re able to stand beside her as she recovers. Please continue donating in her honor and sending words of encouragement her way. It means the world to Iris – and to us – to know that so many people are rallying behind her.

6/3/2025 – Iris Slowly Making Progress

Slowly but surely, Iris is making progress as she continues to heal after being dragged behind a car on a busy road last week. She receives multiple daily rounds of pain medication and antibiotics, as well as regular cleaning and re-dressing of her injured legs. Though her paw pads, chest, belly and legs remain covered in degloving wounds and road rash, Iris’s fighting spirit continues to carry her through. Every day, she has a small patch of new tissue form on her wounds showing us that her body is capable of healing.

Iris is able to walk short distances very carefully, but quickly becomes exhausted as her body is focused on fighting off infection and mending her injuries. We’ve also learned she’s partially deaf, but we aren’t sure if it is from the trauma she’s endured or simply a birth defect. Regardless, we’re grateful to be providing her with the lifesaving medical care she desperately needs.

For now, Iris remains in critical condition and is under constant observation. We are showering her with tender loving care, showing her that human hands can do good. Please continue donating in Iris’s honor using the button below, and sending words of encouragement her way. We share your kind words with her and know it means the world to her to be surrounded by so much love. Thank you for caring.

6/3/2025 – Iris Needs You Now More Than Ever

Iris

Iris is still battling horrific injuries after being dragged behind a car on a busy road last week. Thankfully, her body is doing a good job at keeping infections at bay now that the gaping wounds on her back legs have been surgically closed. Iris’s paw pads are raw and inflamed, shedding dead skin and tissue as her body fights to heal. Her legs and feet remain wrapped for most of the day, as her tissue and muscles are still exposed and at risk of infection. We are taking her healing day by day, and find ourselves in awe of the canine body’s ability to mend itself with the help of modern veterinary medicine. It seems like every time we re-wrap her injuries, we find a small piece of healthy, pink skin where there wasn’t any before.

What’s truly remarkable about Iris’s healing journey is her sheer resilience of mind and body. With every step, tail wag and soft kiss, she shows us that she knows with 100% certainty that we won’t rest until she’s made a full recovery. Though we’ll never understand why this sweet girl has endured such cruelty, we’re grateful to be able to stand beside her as she starts anew. Please continue fighting alongside Iris by donating in her honorTogether, we can ensure that every animal like Iris gets the tender loving care they desperately need and deserve. Thank you for caring.
