Dog With Two Broken Legs Needs Emergency Surgery

Pixie Update

11/13/2025

This brave little Poodle mix came to the Kentucky Humane Society with two broken front legs. We sent her to a specialist who added pins and plates to her bones in hopes that they will begin to mend themselves. After some much-needed rest, Pixie moved into a loving foster home, and she’s doing great!

Her foster paw-rent tells us that Pixie’s first bandage change went smoothly and her healing is right on track. “Pixie is a gentle, sweet, lovable little warrior. She’s always happy to see you and loves to ‘dance’ on her hind legs to greet you. When she gets a little too excited, a few nuzzles and rubs calm her right down.”

Her foster has lovingly nicknamed her “Pixie Sticks,” a perfect fit for this tiny pup with splinted legs and a huge heart! Pixie still has a long road of healing ahead, but thanks to your generosity, she’s getting the care, comfort and love she needs to recover.

Right now, you can make twice the difference for animals like Pixie. Longtime KHS supporter Janice Cooper is matching all gifts made through November 30, up to $50,000! That means when you donate at kyhumane.org/donate or with the button below, your gift will be doubled to help provide lifesaving medical care, food and shelter for pets in need, just like Pixie. Thank you for giving Pixie, and so many others, a second chance at a happy, healthy life!

Support Pixie’s Journey to Recovery

11/4/2025

A local shelter recently reached out to KHS about a one-year-old stray Poodle in need of immediate, lifesaving care. The poor pup had two broken front legs and was shaking with fear when she arrived at our doors, yet her sparkling personality shone through. We named her Pixie and promised her we’d do everything in our power to help her heal.

Both of Pixie’s front left legs are broken near the wrists, leaving her unable to stand, let alone walk. We immediately provided her with pain medication and antibiotics to prevent any looming infections from setting in. Tomorrow, Pixie will visit a specialist, where she’ll undergo surgery on both legs. They need to place metal pins and plates in her tiny bones, and then she will begin her lengthy journey of rest and careful rehabilitation.

Our hope is that when all is said and done, Pixie will be able to keep at least one – if not both of her front legs. We will keep you posted on her progress, but in the meantime, please donate to support lifesaving medical care for our community’s most vulnerable animals. Longtime KHS supporter Janice Cooper is generously kicking off our Give Hope campaign by matching all gifts made through 11/30—up to $50,000. Donate now and your gift will double to provide more food, shelter and compassionate care to homeless dogs, cats and horses who have nowhere else to turn.
