Last week, we introduced you to Ralphie – a four-month-old puppy whose survival is nothing short of miraculous. He unknowingly ingested rat poison while outside scavenging for food and by the time he arrived at KHS, he was actively dying. Ralphie had to be resuscitated with CPR while our team actively pushed an emergency blood transfusion, but against all odds, he’s alive today!
The rat poison that Ralphie ingested was especially dangerous because it attacked the Vitamin K supply in his little body. Vitamin K plays a crucial role in blood clotting and without it, his organs were working overtime and would have soon failed. We’ve added twice-daily rounds of Vitamin K to Ralphie’s treatment plan, successfully preventing further internal bleeding while simultaneously giving his system a break.
Our little miracle pup is now stable and settling into a loving foster home. He’s been a well-behaved patient so far and perks up more each day. As he continues to grow stronger, our focus will shift towards helping Ralphie gain the life skills he needs at this age. Young puppies need lots of socialization and enrichment to help them grow into well-adjusted adults, and we have no doubt his foster parents will do a wonderful job teaching him how the world works.
He may not know it, but Raphie’s left a mark on our hearts that will last a lifetime. Please continue supporting this sweet boy’s recovery by donating in his honor today. Longtime supporter, Janice Cooper, has generously extended her matching gift during our Give Hope campaign, so all gifts will be matched – up to $50,000 – through December 31. Thank you for standing behind Ralphie and the staff who have worked tirelessly to save him!
