Abandoned Puppies Find Surrogate Mom

Wheaties and Cheerios were just a few days old when they were found abandoned at a Dollar General store. Concerned staff rushed the puppies to a nearby animal rescue knowing they wouldn’t survive without immediate care. The shelter quickly put out a plea on social media for a foster who could bottle-feed the fragile pair. Our veterinarian, Dr. Bewley, saw the post and offered to step in. She knew the perfect candidate—Coco, a sweet mama dog who had recently given birth and was caring for her own healthy litter in Dr. Bewley’s home.

Coco was just a few days postpartum, so we were hopeful she could give Wheaties and Cheerios what we couldn’t: a mother’s love and guidance. The introduction was instant magic! As soon as Coco met the puppies, she accepted them without hesitation and immediately allowed Wheaties and Cheerios to begin nursing, bathing them along the way as if they’d always been part of her litter.
Since then, Coco and her blended canine family have blossomed. Wheaties, Cheerios and the rest of their surrogate mama’s litter have weaned and now eat independently with ease. They’re growing bigger and stronger every day and will soon begin searching for loving forever homes.
