Update as of 7/1/2025

We are relieved to share that the 15 puppies rescued from an abandoned home in Carroll County a couple of weeks ago have finally turned the corner. When they arrived at KHS, they were battling Parvo, Coccidia and Hookworms, but their symptoms are now subsiding, and they are becoming perkier and more playful by the day. They’ve even started wagging their tails again! While we mourn the loss of their two siblings who were too sick to recover, it is such a comfort to know these survivors are well on their way to full recovery. They will remain quarantined through the weekend to ensure they aren’t shedding and spreading disease. Our Animal Care & Enrichment team – who’s been by their side since the beginning – has worked so hard to ensure these puppies remain mentally healthy throughout their treatment. Come Monday, it will be time for baths and alteration surgeries, and then these sweet puppies will be ready for adoption!
Thank you for being there for these babies in their time of need. Your donations and words of encouragement make a world of difference for our animals, as well as the staff caring for them. We are so grateful that supporters like YOU make our lifesaving work possible!
Puppies Still Fighting – 6/26/2025

15 puppies are still fighting for their lives in our medical quarantine unit after being rescued from an abandoned home. All of these puppies arrived at our Sam Swope Pet Treatment and Lifesaving Center riddled with hookworms and suffering from either Coccidia or Parvovirus, leaving them diarrhea-ridden, vomiting and extremely lethargic. Currently, four puppies are in our Parvo ward undergoing treatment while the remaining 11 are being treated in a separate quarantine unit for Coccidia. They made small improvements over the weekend and seem slightly more energetic than they were last week, but are still suffering from severe symptoms and require constant observation.

We typically treat active cases of Parvovirus with a monoclonal antibody medication that neutralizes the disease and prevents it from doing further damage. With this group, the risk of exposure was essentially 100% and required an aggressive treatment approach. Despite this medication costing over $200 per vial, we gave all 15 of these puppies this antibody treatment to give them the best chance at survival. We’re hopeful that this will prevent any further Parvo cases from breaking in this litter while simultaneously easing the pain of the four puppies actively fighting Parvo right now. While we can’t guarantee this outcome, any assistance in fending off further infection is a good thing for these small, medically fragile babies. We will continue to closely monitor this canine family to ensure they remain stable, and will keep you posted on their progress. In the meantime, you can support our community’s sickest, most vulnerable animals by donating today. Thank you for your continued support of the animals we hold so dear.
