Parvo Puppy Update 10/10/2025

While Cayenne and Parsley, the puppies quarantined in our Parvo Unit, are slowly recovering after arriving in critical condition last week, just yesterday, another Parvo-positive pup named Lenore entered the unit when a shelter reached out in desperate need of getting her help. They knew that Parvo would soon take this puppy’s life if she went without treatment much longer and rushed her to us. Upon arrival, it became clear this baby’s condition was worsening by the minute. Little Lenore had shocking amounts of blood in her stool and was so lethargic that she practically melted into staff members’ arms as they carried her to our treatment area.

As Cayenne and Parsley are nearing the end of their treatments, Lenore is just beginning hers. She’s already been given the Monoclonal Antibody medication that was instrumental in saving the lives of Cayenne and Parsley. However, Lenore is also suffering from an intense case of mange. It’s heartbreaking to think that while experiencing such a horrific illness, Lenore’s entire body has been unimaginably itchy. We are combating this poor puppy’s pain with IV fluids, medication and nutrition, and are closely monitoring her condition to ensure she doesn’t decline. Her prognosis is guarded but we will not give up.
Lenore has a long road ahead of her, but as Cayenne and Parsley’s recovery shows, there’s hope she’ll one day be a normal puppy again. For now, we’ll do everything we can to ensure every puppy in Parvo treatment receives the individualized, compassionate care they deserve. Together, we can ensure every animal who comes through our doors gets the tender loving care they need to not only survive, but thrive. Thank you for caring!
Parvo Puppy Update – 10/6/2025
The nine hound puppies currently quarantined at our Sam Swope Pet Treatment and Lifesaving Center are slowly but surely improving after arriving in critical condition last week. Each of these nine pups received one-time doses of Elanco‘s Monoclonal Antibody medication last week, in hopes of keeping uninfected pups symptom-free while simultaneously speeding up the recovery of our Parvo-positive puppies – Cayenne and Parsley.

Thankfully, Cayenne and Parsley turned a corner over the weekend and began eating independently. Their seven exposed siblings have continued testing negative and remain asymptomatic, so now none of these puppies require I.V. fluids or nutrition. Unfortunately, they do still have to undergo treatment for ringworm – a common fungal skin infection that causes hairloss – before they can officially leave the quarantine unit behind. Despite isolation and illness working against them, these sweet babies remain in good spirits and seem to get perkier by the day.

For now, we’ll continue to shower these siblings with the love and affection they need to thrive. Quarantines like this aren’t easy on the body or mind, but we’ll be there every step of the way to ensure these nine puppies get plenty of enrichment and hands-on attention while they recover. We’re hopeful that in due time, they’ll be able to run and play like normal puppies again. In the meantime, please continue donating to support our lifesaving work for the most vulnerable animals in our community. Your gifts make it possible for us to stand behind canine families like this one when they need us most. ![]()
Help Save Puppies like Cayenne and Parsley – 10/2/2025

Earlier this week, a litter of nine hound puppies arrived at KHS in heartbreaking condition. They were skinny, flea-ridden and already showing signs of illness at just six weeks old. Poor Cayenne and Parsley, the two most fragile of the group, tested positive for both Parvovirus and Ringworm. Left untreated, this could be deadly to unvaccinated puppies.

Cayenne and Parsley, along with their seven siblings, were immediately given Elanco’s single-injection Parvovirus Monoclonal Antibody medication to hopefully minimize the virus’s ability to spread. The treatment is costly, but can make the difference between life or death for a puppy battling Parvo. We’re hopeful that, with this medication, they will perk up and eat on their own soon! In the meantime, Cayenne and Parsley are receiving extra care of IV fluids, nutrition and medication as they fight to survive.
In addition to Parvo, all of the siblings are experiencing hair loss and undergoing treatment for Ringworm. Because of this, all nine must remain in medical quarantine while our dedicated team provides them with round-the-clock care.
While their prognosis is guarded, we are clinging to hope that these tiny, innocent puppies will one day know what it means to run, play and explore the big, beautiful world they deserve.
This kind of lifesaving care is only possible because of compassionate people like you. Your support makes it possible for us to give these helpless puppies the treatment they need. Please consider making a gift today to stand behind Cayenne, Parsley and all the vulnerable animals who arrive at our doors with no one else to turn to. Thank you for caring!
